Posted by Marcos Ancelovici on July 16, 2007

While the French military and Sarkozy were walking up the Champs-Élysées for the official July 14th celebration, an alternative parade was taking place: clowns were in charge, undocumented immigrants (sans-papiers) invoked the end of slavery in 1794, and environmentalist activists denounced genetically modified organisms and the use of nuclear energy. Yikes! These clown protesters are literally everywhere. There was a whole bunch of them at the Heiligendamm G-8 summit, and now this. I suspect there’s a nice sociology article just waiting here, “Clowning Around: The Not-So-Hidden Meaning of Clown Protesters.” Maybe it’s worth a shot, Marcos ;-)
