Following up on last week’s post on globalization and war, I’d like to point out a video from The Nation in which investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill explains how the Bush administration is outsourcing the war in Iraq. Not only is the US government not fighting a regular, state army but it’s also relying on private corporations to carry out its war. Therefore, it would be a mistake to boil down war to inter-state conflict, as Martin, Mayer, and Thoenig do in the article I discussed in my previous post.
On May 10, 2007, Scahill testified before the US House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense on the impact of private military contractors on the conduct of the Iraq War.
